Tech-No?

Technology is pretty cool isn’t it? You want to take a four-minute clip of your kitten playing in a box? No problem. You want to watch Miley twerking 21 times in a row on YouTube? Go wild. You want to make a confession on Twitter? Go on then, embrace those 140 characters.

Despite the convenience of technology, though, research is showing that the gadgets we use every day are doing us a fair amount of harm, both physically and emotionally.

 

It’s messing with your sleep.

Gone are the days when the setting sun meant that it was time for bed. Now, when it gets dark out, TV’s, computers and cellphones light up our lives, and people are awake until all ours browsing the internet or streaming series. But, according to the Harvard Health letter, this is not good news at all, as bright lights at night throw off your body’s biological clock and your sleep cycle suffers as a result.

In a study published in the Applied Ergonomics Journal, research showed that exposure to light from computers and phones can lower levels of the hormone melatonin. This is important, as melatonin regulates your internal clock and plays a roll in your sleep. When precious shut-eye time is affected, general health and well-being decreases.

 

It’s hurting your eyes.

Although it is not specifically  the bright screens that cause, eye trouble, staring at your computer all day can have a negative effect on your vision.

According to optometrist Jacqui Bauer, it’s the shorter distance that the eyes are having to work at that is the real problem.

Son struggling with severe headaches:

My 15 year old son, Brogan, came home from school in October complaining about a headache. Thinking of his history with sinusitis we just thought it was a bad sinus attack seeing it was that time of the year. We gave him some meds that we kept in the house. The next morning the headache was actually worse. He had a fever and was very listless and he couldn’t keep his head up straight. We took him to our GP who diagnosed him with severe sinusitis, gave him some tablets and a nasal spray. By the end of the following week he was still complaining about the headache.

We then took him to another GP who said it was tension headaches. He was given a shot, some ibuprofens and some paracetamols. We were very optimistic thinking that these meds would help because its two weeks later and he is still suffering and final exams is upon us….to our horror, this meds didn’t help either…it was now almost a month that my son was suffering with headaches and as a parent you feel helpless. Here we go again, off to another GP…again he was diagnosed with tension headaches but now the drugs that he has been using thus far might have caused drug induced headaches. This GP recommended a tablet that is used to stop the headache before it even occurs…. More meds and still no relieve, we were already in the middle of November and still nothing is relieving the pain. Brogan is very active in sports but as a result of the headaches he couldn’t even take part in the last games of the season, he was feeling too rotten.

Most children are required to carry heavy school bags to and from school each day, and the load increases as they reach higher grades. Sports clothing and equipment often adds another bag to their load. Your child’s spine could be in for a tough time coping with all the increased stress, and when you add poor posture, lack of exercise and hours of computer time each day into the mix. According to a study published in the journal ‘Spine’, daily backpack carrying is a frequent cause of discomfort for school children. School backpacks were felt to be heavy by 79.1% of children, to cause fatigue by 65.7%, and to cause back pain by 46.1. Studies show children should not carry any more than 10 per cent of their body weight and that anything over 15 per cent can be damaging.

If the child has to lean forward when walking with a loaded pack, it is too heavy. A heavy backpack has a number of undesirable effects to your child’s spine. It distorts the natural curves in the middle and lower back, causing muscle strain, headaches, irritation to the spine joints and the rib cage, reduced breathing capacity and may hamper his/her overall growth. Spinal dysfunction that results from these poor habits, may affect your child’s ability to study or participate in sport; setting a poor foundation for spinal health that may carry through into adulthood.

Muscle Left Behind – Muscle Imbalance. To get a strong and sculpt a sleek silhouette, you have to identify which muscles are slacking and whip them into shape.

Nearly every muscle in your body has a corresponding muscle group that carries out the opposite function. Take your biceps and triceps: their even match-up lets you bend and straighten your elbow without any thought. That’s how it should work, at least. Unfortunately, everyday habits (like sitting at a desk), repetitive workouts (say, that marathon you’re training for, or your weekly abs class) and even your wardrobe (yes your skyscraper heels) threaten these partnerships.

The result:one of the muscles becomes stronger and overpowers the other, a common condition known as muscular imbalance, which can worsen poor posture and wreak havoc on your figure, says trainer Melissa Paris. (tight hip flexors, for example, can tilt your hips forward and give you a “boep”.) Correcting them , she adds, helps elongate your silhouette and can actually make you look slimmer.

Osteopathy worked wonders for my son. Since complications during his birth, Caleb Sedeman (12) of Cape Town has always struggled with low muscle tone, a speech impediment, epilepsy and ADHD. He also has a very high pain threshold which means he doesn’t always realise when he hurts himself. But his mom, Celestia, says osteopathy has worked wonders for her son.

Caleb’s story

“Hours after Caleb and I were released from the hospital following his birth, we were readmitted to the ICU unit at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital,” recalls Celestia. “He was treated for apnoea [temporary inability to breathe] and acute tubular necrosis [damaged kidney tissue caused by lack of oxygen], and he was struggling to feed like a newborn or pass any urine. We stayed there for three weeks and the doctors were amazed that he was still alive.”

Today Celestia and Caleb’s lives consist of a range of regular therapies in order for Caleb to be able to function normally. These include occupational therapy, speech therapy and regular visits to a neurologist. Celestia’s mom helps her with this busy schedule. “My mom is always reading up and trying to find new ways of helping him – that’s when she came across a book on women who had difficult births, and they suggested cranial osteopathy for helping children recover from traumatic births.”

Osteopathy can help migraines

A Migraine is a painful and sometimes disabling headache, which typically effects one side of the head and can be accompanied by a sensory warning sign (aura) via the sympathetic nervous system that may include increased sensitivity to light or sound, nausea, blurred vision and tingling in the arms and legs, which can last from two hours to four days. If preceded with an aura then the migraine is known as a “classic migraine”, if not then it is usually a “common migraine”.

A migraine headache is caused by dramatic changes in the blood vessels in the neck that supply blood to the brain. Dysfunctional signals from both nerves and hormones/chemicals force these vessels to contract and then dilate much wider than normal forcing blood into the head faster than it can drain out, resulting in increased pressure in the head, a release of certain chemicals and severe pain.

Even though migraine causes are thought to be of a vascular mechanism, mechanical problems (prolonged muscle and fascial tension affecting the joints of your neck will contribute to causing a headache as well as over stimulating your nervous system which in turn may be causing or contributory factor in migraines. Movement of blood and lymph also become restricted. Poor circulation affects oxygen delivery to the brain and prevents waste product removal – this also creates pain and discomfort.

The majority of headaches are caused by tension and poor posture, osteopathy is ideally placed to provide treatment and relief in these areas. Sacroiliac Joint Pain – I have suffered from chronic recurrent lower lumbar spine and sacroiliac joint pain for 14 years, related to a recurring alignment fault of my lower lumbar facet joints and sacroiliac joints.

A history of hospitalisation and multiple tests came to naught. I endured progressive paralysis of the torso for 11 months and from the compacting of muscle and nerve compression I endured permanent migraine and partial blindness in my right eye.  At the time I was reduced to a wheelchair and had no reasonable explanation offered for my disability.

Physiotherapists finally managed to diagnose and effect joint positional correction enabling me to regain function and muscle activity but it took 1 ½ years to learn to walk and maneuver myself effectively. The symptoms, unfortunately, recurred all the time. Without timeous intervention and realignment correction, the pain and muscle spasm cycle rapidly spiralled into the problem again with headaches and significant disability in activities of my daily living.

I have had successful management with conservative physiotherapy treatment over the past 12 years on an almost weekly basis. They were able to effect relief due to the use, I believe, of osteopathic techniques interspersed with the physiotherapy. My dependence on these all too frequent treatments was decidedly draining but I was enormously relieved and incalculably grateful for the help towards a relatively normal life.

I have recently found Dr Guy Ashburner, an Osteopath practitioner, who has been providing me with osteopathic treatments and practical management strategy to maintain my functional ability.

Many office workers visit osteopaths or other physical therapists to relieve neck and back problems. Sitting with poor posture for prolonged periods of time often results in headaches, neck and back pain, postural fatigue of the shoulders, and a multitude of other unpleasant aches and pains.

Fascia is the fibrous connective tissue that surrounds muscles, groups of muscles, blood vessels and nerves, binding those structures together. Visualise how plastic wrap is used to hold the contents of sandwiches together, and you’ll get the general idea: When we adopt prolonged poor postures, our fascia becomes stuck in a certain position.

Try this exercise to see what I mean. Adopt a slumped-over posture. You’ll see that the shirt or top you are wearing crumples up over your abdomen. Imagine that material is fascia, and if you remained still long enough it would stay in that position, now hold the material where it is and try to sit up. You won’t be able to, because the material is holding you fast. If you sit badly for long enough you will stay sitting badly, because your fascia will shorten, closely followed by your muscles. Did your mother ever tell you that if you keep a funny face or a cross expression for long enough, it will stick like that? Well, theoretically it is true!

If you are desk bound, you probably regularly find yourself sinking into a bad postural position, with your chest collapsed and your shoulders slumped. Eventually many people find that this becomes their normal posture. This drooping position lengthens the fascia on the back of the body and shortens it on the front. Chronic shoulder, neck and back pain are the result.

Good circulation is essential in order for the body to get proper nutrients, and for the removal of waste products. Lack of movement leads to the development of stasis, congestion of bodily fluids and pain and other problems appear. The movement may get restricted due to distortion of a tissue after an injury or due to the pull from some other tight structure that did not heal properly after an old injury.

Osteopathy embraces the philosophy that the body has an innate or natural ability to self-regulate and to heal itself. The key factor that permits this process to proceed unimpeded is the ability of the body to circulate all of its fluids and liquids. These fluids include the blood, lymph, synovial fluid, digestive juices, and other fluids of the body. These liquids carry many of the body’s life-sustaining compounds, such as hormones, enzymes and their secretions, immune and anti-inflammatory factors, neural impulses, nutrition, and dissolved gases such as oxygen.

Any obstruction that impedes the circulation of fluids within the body is the focus of osteopathic assessment and treatment. Structural impediments include twists, curves or pulls within the body structure and organs as well stress and its effect on the nervous system .These faults may either affect the control of a system that controls fluid circulation, or affect the circulation of liquids along with the life sustaining and regulatory products that they carry.
