A groin strain is a tearing of the groin muscles. The muscles on the inner thigh are known as the adductor muscles. These muscles originate from the pubic bone of the pelvis and insert into the inside of the thigh bones (femur) and shin bones(tibia). The groin muscles stabilize the hip/pelvis and move the leg towards the midline of the body. Symptoms may include stiffness or pain around the inner thigh, hip, pubic bone or abdominal area. The pelvis is a dynamic structure and it can easily be thrown out of balance, especially if there are long term postural or muscle balance issues putting more pressure on the pubic bone in the groin. A groin strain may occur due to a sudden contraction of the groin muscles and invariably when they are in a stretched position or during rapid acceleration, especially following an inadequate warm-up. This is commonly seen in running sports such as rugby, football, hockey (predominantly when changing direction or when a rugby player or footballer performs a long kick) and athletics (particularly sprinters, hurdlers, and long jumpers) as well as skiing, horse riding, dancing and gymnastics. Plantar fasciitis sufferers feel a sharp stab or deep ache and stiffness on the bottom of the foot especially near the inside edge or center of the heel and along the inside arch in the mid-foot area.

Symptoms develop gradually over time. It usually affects just one foot, but it can affect both feet.

Fascia is found throughout the body enveloping and linking muscles, bones and organs. In the foot it is a very tough tissue which runs from the heel to the bones in the middle of the foot and acts as a shock absorber, whilst supporting the arch of the foot in locomotion. This fascia continues to the calf muscles and hamstrings. Commonly the pain that is worse upon getting out of bed in the morning. Taking that first step may cause a sudden strain on the bottom of the foot. The pain can recur after long spells of sitting, but it tends to fade during exercise, once the area is warmed up.

Hip bursitis symptoms most often include a deep aching pain that concentrates on the outside of the hip joint at the top of the outer thigh. This sometimes includes buttock pain which may extend down the outside of the leg towards the knee. The pain is usually intense and sharp in the early stages of the condition and may develop into a dull ache over time.

Normal activities such as walking, climbing stairs, running, sitting cross-legged, getting up from a chair or prolonged standing often aggravate the symptoms. Lying on the hip at night is very painful and may be severe enough that it disturbs your sleep. Putting pressure over the trochanter with your finger increases the pain. Stiffness may develop around the hip joint

The trochanteric bursa is a large fluid filled sac which facilitates the gliding of skin, buttock and thigh tendons over the greater trochanter which is the large bump that can be felt on the outside of the femur or upper leg bone. The bursa has the function of working as a shock absorber and as a lubricant for the movement of the muscles adjacent to it thus preventing friction. Muscles attach to this bony prominence so the hip joint is able to move. When this bursa becomes inflamed and causes pain it’s called trochanteric bursitis. Trochanteric bursitis can strike anyone but seems more prevalent in females and senior patients.

Constipation refers to bowel movements that are infrequent or hard to pass. So passing stools less than usual could be a sign of constipation. Other symptoms of constipation may include stomach ache and cramps, feeling bloated, feeling sick, loss of appetite and lack of energy. Constipation has many possible causes. Constipation most commonly occurs when waste or stool moves too slowly through the digestive tract or cannot be eliminated effectively, which may cause the stool to become hard and dry.

Constipation is not uncommon in acute fevers, the first few days of holiday, following surgery, emotional upset, limited dietary fiber (indigestible plant matter), not enough fluids, lack of physical activity and specific medications. If it persists for no good reason, it should be investigated, especially as some serious bowel disorders are heralded by changes in bowel habits.

Impaired spinal mechanics and mobility can affect bowel function. These conditions include degenerative conditions of the disc and spinal joints, chronic stiffness of the spine and pelvis, and acute joint strains with localised inflammation which may impact on nerve function. Some children and adults who are born breech can experience constipation due to early stress in the lumbar and pelvic area. Serious disc prolapses can cause not only loss of movement in the bowel but urinary retention and leg paralysis. See your doctor for diagnosis and treatment. It is important not to over-treat constipation with laxatives in place of seeking medical advice

Conventional medical treatment for constipation typically consists of dietary modification, increased fluid intake and exercise frequency, but many people do not respond to these interventions. Over the counter and prescription medications can help relieve the symptoms.

Andrew Taylor Still, MD, DO (1828-1917) the founder of osteopathy, was a man endowed with imagination, rare vision and perseverance. He was born on August 6, 1828 in Virginia. The word ‘God’ permeates his writings as he was a Christian. He spent his formative years in Missouri, where his preacher-physician father had been sent as a missionary. He was robust and strong and lived close to nature. He was fond of observing different animals to understand their nature and movement.

Although Stills parents wanted him to become a Minister, his passion lay in the field of medicine. He believed that there is God in everyone and saw people as holistic beings who have the ability to self-heal.

In 1874 Dr. Still stated that, “he did not invent osteopathy”. Instead, he discovered a universal truth of the law of, matter, mind, and motion. This triune nature of mankind was also described as a physical body, a mental body, and a spiritual body. He believed that all we need to sustain life, already is within us, thus he searched for new ways to help the body heal itself.

He studied medicine at the Kansas City school of Physicians & Surgeons. His first patients were Shawnee Indians. He learned their language and lived his life by a similar nature-centred belief system. Later he joined the Army Medical Corps as a surgeon. At end of the war, in October1864, he was discharged from military service with the rank of Major. He resumed private practice.
