Osteopathy can Treats Whiplash

Whiplash is an injury associated with motor vehicle accidents, contact sports injuries, accidental falls and assault which causes chronic pain, disability, activity limitations, and often psychological distress.

When you have an accident that causes excessive motion or force applied to your neck it can damage the ligaments, muscles and joints. In addition the nerves can be overstretched that leave the neck and this can lead to arm pain, numbness and even blurred vision.

Whiplash Symptoms may be immediate or progress gradually taking a few days, weeks or months to manifest completely. The injured party often perceive themselves to be uninjured initially, having a few symptom-free days. A whiplash of the neck region rarely, if ever, results in symptoms exclusively at the neck, rather the entire body will experience the repercussions of the injury.

Common complaints following whiplash are:

  • Sprains and Strains
  • Shoulder and Neck Pain
  • Headaches
  • Numbness
  • Dizziness & Vertigo
  • Lower Back Pain
  • Pain in Legs or Arms
  • Car Seatbelt Injury

Osteopathic management of whiplash injuries is aimed at reducing pain and inflammation and then at restoring mobility and function throughout the body reducing the need for medication. After a thorough case history and examination (especially important with whiplash due to the widespread nature of symptoms) the osteopath will use gentle manipulation and appropriate rehabilitation to return the body to its natural and healthy state.

Any treatment that the whiplash patient receives that fails to address the all musculoskeletal effects of the whiplash may result in reoccurrence of whiplash type symptoms.

Osteopathic whole body approach benefits whiplash injury patients by aiding  recovery from acute injury, improves physical mobility thereby reducing further injury in the future and  promotes a healthy future and the ability to sustain a pain-free life.
